Exterior Fall Maintenance Checklist

As Labor Day has come and gone, and summer is coming to an end, it’s important to take some time to prepare your home for the changing of the Iowa seasons.  Here’s a brief home exterior fall maintenance checklist that should be done routinely on every home.

1.  Check the roof surface for any damage, make repairs if necessary, inspect flashing around penetrations, and seal the gaps.

2.  All gutters and downspouts need to be secured and cleaned, even if you have gutter guards.  All leaking seams need to be sealed.  Make sure to disconnect long extensions resting on the ground to prevent them from freezing.

3.   Next on the list is the soffit, fascia and house trim.  You’ll want to check for moisture damage and replace any missing sections to minimize rodent penetration.

4.  Fix any siding panels by sealing gaps and cracks or replacing.

5.  Make your home more energy efficient by checking all penetrations around the windows, doors, pipes, vents, etc. for gaps and cracks.  If needed, re-seal with caulking or silicon.  Check the weather striping around exterior doors and adjust thresholds to prevent air drafts.

If you feel that you may be in over your head with any of the tasks on this fall maintenance checklist, please don’t hesistate to contact us as we want to make sure your home is prepared for what mother nature has in store.
